Slate Blue
I watch them pour a drink and
I can feel the ice be hit
With smooth whiskey
On my fingertips
The drone of a jukebox (electric of course)
And chatter and fake laughter
Swirl together
With a lack of mercy or character
I had a high heel drop out of my car
One night leaving here
I wasn’t even wearing it
Was just roaming my backseat
It’s always the dive bars that
Are in the basement
With the dimmest lights
That I feel mercy leave me.
